The Spirent DLS 90 is an advanced ADSL Wireline Simulator designed to replicate a 2-wire length of cable with frequencies up to 1.5 MHz, offering practical simulation capabilities up to 2 MHz. This versatile simulator enables users to easily adjust the length of the simulated cable either through the front panel of the device or via a computer interface. Primarily intended for laboratory and production line applications, the DLS 90 facilitates the emulation of real-world wireline scenarios on a compact benchtop unit.
Connectivity options for the DLS 90 include RJ-45 connectors and a terminal block, available at both the front and back of the device. These connectors are arranged in parallel, allowing seamless integration with other devices. The simulator can be controlled through the IEEE 488 and RS-232 serial interfaces, with straightforward commands for setting the channel length. Additionally, the DLS 90 supports various IEEE 488.2 and SCPI commands. At the core of this simulator is its motherboard, housing the simulation circuitry, microprocessor, control logic, power supply, analog connectors (RJ-45 and terminal block), and digital interfaces (RS-232 and IEEE 488).
Before powering on the DLS 90, it is essential to verify that the line voltage section at the rear of the unit corresponds to the local line voltage. The simulator operates using a two-fuse configuration and requires connection to a power source to function. Notably, the DLS 90 features a convenient memory feature that retains the last configuration even when the power is turned off. Moreover, an optional functionality allows the wireline length to be restored or reset to zero. Side A of the simulator can be accessed via any of the RJ-45 connectors, while Side B can be accessed using either RJ-45 or terminal blocks.
Control of the DLS 90 is facilitated through the four arrow keys located on the front panel. The left and right arrow keys are used to select the desired digit, while the up and down keys adjust its value. When reaching the maximum or minimum value, the adjustment process stops. The display on the device presents the current length of the simulated cable, the type of wireline being simulated, and the maximum length indicated in the lower right section of the screen. Cable length resolution is set at 50 ft for AWG units and 50m for 0.4mm PE. After 1 second of keyboard inactivity, the simulator automatically sets the cable length. Additionally, the DLS 90 offers full bi-directional wireline simulation, utilizes a female DB-25 connector, and is configured as a DCE (Data Communications Equipment) device.
